Babbitting Service

We are your Babbitt Bearing Experts.  It's all we do!  The pouring and machining of Babbitt in antique engines is our specialty.

Our Proprietary Formula

Babbitt is a very general term to describe the soft metal used to work between the harder metals of a block crank or camshaft.

For decades, we poured a softer lead based Babbitt and a harder tin based Babbitt and its use depended on the application and customer preference. We still offer these upon request.

Both grades of Babbitt had pros and cons. The soft Babbitt was known for good adhesion to the rod or bearing. There was less chance of the Babbitt coming loose. It would not develop cracks as easily. It also did not put excessive ware on the crank or camshaft.

The downside of the soft Babbitt was it would wear and would require occasional adjustments with shims.

The downside to the hard Babbitt was it was more likely to crack or not adhere to the rod or bearing. It was also known for causing wear on the shaft it was designed to protect.

The upside was it was less likely to need an adjustment using shims down the road.

Developing the New Formula

With the help of our metal suppliers, some of the best antique auto engine builders in the country and key customers that participated in the R&D process, we successfully developed our new formula.

In 2006 we rolled out the new formula to all our customers and it was a HUGE success.

Though we do not share the formula, we do say it is high on tin content.  We feel we have captured the best qualities of our original formula with added adhesion and almost no wear.

This Babbitt will not come loose.  Because of the no-wear aspect of our Babbitt, shims are not required as an adjustment later but we are still happy to add shims if requested by the customer.

Our new formula is easier to machine, groove and polish.

Bottom Line

When you combine the qualities of our new Babbitt bearing formula, the enhanced qualities of the tinning materials now available and the enhanced qualities of oil, failures and adjustments are a thing of the past.
